i’m in your boat. when i first heard his voice about 5 years ago, i had an instant negative reflex. since then, though, i think my ears are tuned more to his gravelly style. i might attribute it to listening to charlie patton, mississippi fred mcdowell and some of the rawer delta blues singers.
did anyone catch ‘coffee and cigarettes’? tom waits has a very funny vignette with iggy pop, in which the movie’s creators have a field day with waits’ supposed mythic status (“i’m a doctor and a musician . . . i performed a roadside tracheotomy this morning with a ballpoint pen”).
anyway, i think i’m ready. where to start with a back catalog as big as his?
