a mansion, a robe, and a crown

she heard Heaven was a place where no one cried,
all painted streets and
faces like Preacher’s cheery handshake
the day his daughter ran away
and no one mourned for those who mourned
below because after all they had their chance
and the saints were all too busy playing bingo and
fulfilling fantasies put off for when it
wasn’t a sin no more. because Heaven
was everything they wanted it to be.

in bible class they drew pictures of Heaven
she drew her house
and the hole in the fence and the worms
that came up when it rained real hard.
billy laughed
because who wants a hole in the fence in Heaven?
she gave him her best scowl and cried
and told herself no tears in heaven no broken fences either
but maybe there’s somewhere

somewhere
where you cry when your best friend breaks her arm
where if your daughter runs away
you’re allowed to stop preaching and break down on the third pew
where some fences are just fine
broken
and billy’s dad comes back so he doesn’t laugh at people anymore.

maybe there’s somewhere.
