Say it ain't so

Certainly no external force should stop Nader from accepting those donations, but I find it sad that he’d accept them.

Surely this level of support from his opponents indicates a deep-seated belief that Nader is a powerful tool in defeating Kerry? It may be that Nader disagrees with their analysis, but polls are generally seeming to bear their theory out. It seems rather as if he’s got a “ends justify means” mindset going that is simply playing into the hands of negative campaigning.

Personally, I think a real alternative in US politics needs to be established from the ground up. Breaking away from the cult of personality around the President, and establishing a party in the hearts and minds of the people. I find it sad that Nader will be taking so much money that could otherwise be spent establishing, say, the Green Party with a whole lot more stability.

Incidentally, the August 2004 Harper’s Magazine has an excellent forum on ‘Liberalism Regained’, focussing on opening up US politics. Nader is one of the participants.

James.
